Link the Gulf of Gdańsk crossing, exposed Hel approach and actual port or river entrance to the correct Baltic product and local observations.
The bay, outer coast and river entrance are separate legs
Specify whether the yacht is approaching from the open Baltic, crossing the Gulf of Gdańsk or moving between local harbours. Mark exposure around Hel and the exact destination entrance at its ETA. Gdańsk includes different port and river approaches, so a city-centre pin is not a usable arrival plan. Do not apply a Vistula Lagoon forecast to the open gulf by similarity of name; choose the product and navigation information for the actual track.
Keep the synoptic forecast and its warning together
On IMGW-PIB's Baltic portal, select the named marine sector and read the issue, UTC validity and warning separately. Match the wording to the offshore and bay legs, rather than treating the latest homepage item as covering everything. The SWAN display can add wave direction and significant-height detail, but is model output with its own timestamp. A search-cached synoptic bulletin may be genuine yet expired; it cannot establish a current departure window.
A harbour sensor is not the exposed cape
The Maritime Office in Gdynia provides Hydro-Meteo observations from different stations, including Gdańsk port sites and Hel/exposed coastal sites. Record the sensor, measured variable and timestamp; automatic and manual updates are not equivalent. A sheltered wind observation can support an in-port check while underrepresenting the sea outside. Water-level information needs its stated reference before comparison with chart depth. If an exposed observation is missing, leave that evidence gap explicit instead of borrowing a convenient port number.
Verify the actual harbour approach
The Gdańsk Harbour Master's page identifies its jurisdiction and links to navigation information, legal acts and port plans. Consult the current plan and marina instructions for the selected entrance; a commercial channel procedure cannot be copied indiscriminately to every leisure berth. Follow the official discovery link to BHMW navigational warnings and verify active status. Weather improvement alone does not remove a temporary obstruction, traffic restriction or access requirement, and this page does not prescribe a track through the port.
Plan the arrival limit, not just the start
Assess the destination entrance under the wind and wave direction expected at arrival. A near shore port is not automatically a reliable refuge if its entrance becomes exposed. Set a confirmed waiting option before the open section, a new-issue check and conditions that trigger reconsideration. Include cold-water exposure, visibility and crew fatigue, even on a short bay crossing. The skipper retains the final navigation and sailing decision; a prepared desk is not real-time harbour clearance.
