Prepare exposed southern-Baltic coastal legs, western lagoon connections and harbour entrances separately; they do not share one forecast or refuge assumption.
From Pomeranian waters to the Gulf of Gdańsk
This desk covers the planning distinction between the exposed Polish Baltic coast, Pomeranian Gulf and the Gulf of Gdańsk, not a single meteorological district. Mark which coastal stretch the yacht crosses and whether it continues into Szczecin Lagoon or another sheltered waterway. Lagoon access introduces different shallow-water and navigation questions. An international itinerary can require German and Polish products; national borders do not create a sudden change in sea state, but they can change the responsible source and rules.
Assign a named sector to every exposed leg
IMGW-PIB's Baltic portal separates sea sectors, lagoon forecasts and meteorological/hydrological warnings. Identify the correct sector for each leg and arrival time, then preserve the current issue and UTC valid period. Do not read a whole-coast conclusion from one city forecast or one automatically selected point. Where a route crosses into another authority's coverage, add the matching product rather than extending an authentic Polish bulletin beyond its stated area. A saved issue is useful offline only while its validity still applies.
An exposed entrance can limit the whole coastal trip
Compare wind direction, wave direction and exposure at the destination, not only offshore average height. Onshore waves at an entrance can make a geographically close port unsuitable as the fallback you assumed. SWAN significant wave height is not a maximum-wave promise or an assessment of breaking over a local shoal. Verify charts, harbour information and the entrance at arrival; plan a waiting option before committing to the exposed leg rather than counting every mapped port as refuge.
Use the western and eastern authorities honestly
The Maritime Office in Szczecin's navigation-conditions page is the direct western-coast entry for active warnings, harbour notices and access information, including Świnoujście and lagoon ports. Older notices and their cancellations coexist; read status and boundaries. Gdynia's Hydro-Meteo stations add useful eastern coastal observations, not nationwide station coverage. Preserve sensor exposure, time and vertical reference. A low harbour reading does not invalidate a sea-sector warning, and a navigation notice does not supply a missing weather observation.
Water level, season and the next check
For shallow approaches consider weather-driven water-level changes using the applicable hydrological product and chart datum; do not assume a tide table alone settles Baltic depth. Check seasonal ice and buoy/harbour information when relevant. Keep a cold-water response, visibility margin and realistic crew limits for the exposed sections. End the brief with the next official-issue check, an attainable alternative and explicit reconsideration triggers. This desk informs planning without determining the skipper's final sailing or navigation decision.
Official products by task
- IMGW-PIB Baltic marine forecasts and warnings — Polish marine portal with named Baltic sectors and lagoon products. Select forecast/meteorological or hydrological warning separately and read UTC validity; archived/search-cached examples are not current weather.
- IMGW-PIB SWAN wave model — Model significant-wave-height product, with its own issue and valid lead. The issuer states it is not continuously checked by a forecaster; it cannot certify breaking waves or passage through a harbour entrance.
- Maritime Office Szczecin navigation conditions and notices — Western Polish authority entry for active warnings, harbour-master notices and access/depth information, including Świnoujście and Szczecin Lagoon ports. Cancellation notices coexist with older notices; inspect status and boundaries. This is not a weather observation service.
- Maritime Office Gdynia Hydro-Meteo observations — Automatic and manually updated local stations, including two Gdańsk port sites and exposed coastal sites. Read each timestamp and parameter; stations differ and are not interchangeable with open-bay measurements.
- Maritime Office link to Polish navigational warnings — Official authority page links to BHMW coastal/local warnings. This is a verified discovery link, not the active bulletin itself; follow through and check expiry. BHMW content was not readable in this audit.
Waters and onward passages
- Baltic Sea
A Baltic overview should lead to the right national sea sector and water-level product.
- German Baltic: Kiel and Lübeck bays
Use local Baltic sectors and water-level information rather than a generic North Sea tide product.
Countries and local sources
- Poland
Choose the exposed Baltic coast, Gulf of Gdańsk, western lagoons or inland sailing before matching forecasts and harbour information to the trip.
- Germany
North Sea tidal approaches and Baltic bays need separate weather and water-level products.
Departure ports and bases
- Gdańsk
Link the Gulf of Gdańsk crossing, exposed Hel approach and actual port or river entrance to the correct Baltic product and local observations.
Map orientation
The approximate area centre is not an approach waypoint, a track, a depth survey or a forecast-zone boundary. The third-party map loads only after your click.
