Stockholm: Marine Weather & Passage Planning

Plan the actual marina, inner fairways and outer-skerry leg separately; Stockholm water-level data does not cover every archipelago entrance.

A city name is not the departure waypoint

Specify the booked marina and intended exit before using Stockholm as a weather location. An inner-city berth, a bay farther out and an island departure have different routes to exposed water. Mark the channel section, any open crossing and the final anchorage with separate ETA lines. The map here is approximate geographic orientation, not a plotted fairway, forecast polygon or statement that every named marina can accept the yacht.

Use the outer-archipelago sea district

Read SMHI's named sea-weather districts for the actual exposed section, and preserve the current issue and valid time. Wind is stated in m/s in the linked text; convert deliberately if the crew uses knots. An inner Stockholm observation may describe manoeuvring at departure but cannot overturn a marine warning outside the skerries. Include gusts, visibility and the forecast wind change affecting the return shore, not only the outbound mean wind.

Read Stockholm level without exporting it everywhere

The linked SMHI Stockholm table labels water level in RH2000 and separates observation from forecast columns. Check the latest timestamp and missing fields rather than filling gaps from yesterday's curve. Verify the datum used by the current chart before interpreting depth. A city gauge does not measure the level at every remote narrow passage, nor does it supply a safe under-keel margin, bridge clearance or local current at the chosen hour.

Fairway traffic and port information need their own check

Sjöfartsverket's port-information links identify Stockholm port areas, bridges, locks and berths, while its navigational-warning service covers active hazards. Read those separately from weather. Pilot-area guidance can be aimed at commercial vessels; do not adopt ship-size-specific restrictions as universal yacht limits. Confirm the actual marina's instructions and charted access. Ferries and other large traffic can constrain a narrow-water option even where the wave exposure is reduced.

Choose a credible shorter day

When the outer leg worsens, test a shorter protected itinerary against chart access, navigation workload and the return wind direction. Do not assume that an inside route or the nearest island anchorage is usable simply because it appears sheltered on a map. Set a new-bulletin check before leaving the protected section, retain a communications backup and add an ice/access check when seasonal. This desk supports preparation; the skipper controls the final sailing decision.

Official products by task

  • SMHI low-bandwidth sea-weather bulletin — Named sea districts, wind in m/s and issue/validity at the issuer. Open-sea coverage is not a forecast for every skerry channel; preserve any relative date with retrieval time.
  • SMHI Stockholm water level — Station table distinguishes observations and forecast columns and labels RH2000. Check timestamp, missing values and the chart datum; this is not a depth-clearance calculation.
  • Sjöfartsverket ViVa observations — Official station-selection application for wind and water information. Parameters differ by station; inspect time, sensor exposure, units and reference level. Observations do not replace warnings.
  • Swedish navigational warnings in force — Navigation/MSI notices, separate from SMHI weather warnings; identify the geographical area and active period. Web access is a complement to appropriate broadcast reception.
  • Sjöfartsverket Stockholm port information — Official links to port areas, locks, bridges and berths. Pilot-area material has a defined scope and may concern commercial vessels; use current charts, notices and the actual marina instructions.
