Choose a coast, not a national weather icon
Sweden offers different sailing problems: Baltic island passages, the Skagerrak/Kattegat west coast and longer northern-water legs. Begin by marking the exposed part of the itinerary, not just the marina. Stockholm skerries and Bohuslän are not the same forecast district. Keep an inland-lake trip separate from a coastal plan; a national holiday itinerary can require several products and new checks during the week.
Attach every leg to the correct sea district
SMHI's text bulletin is a useful low-bandwidth starting point because it names sea districts and states wind units. Select the districts crossed by the actual track, then check coastal detail where needed. Preserve issue time, valid period and whether the wording refers to today or tomorrow. A search-engine copy or an old saved bulletin cannot establish the conditions for your departure.
Inside shelter and outside exposure
In an archipelago, a short exposed gap may set the practical limit for an otherwise sheltered day. Compare wind direction with fetch and the anchorage entrance, and include gusts and visibility in the crew's workload. An alternative inside route can reduce waves yet add narrow-water navigation. Confirm its charting, depth and ability to turn back rather than treating every island chain as guaranteed shelter.
Read the observation and its reference
ViVa supplies station-based wind and water information; available variables differ between sites. Record the sensor, timestamp and exposure instead of choosing the nearest dot automatically. For water level, preserve the stated vertical reference and check compatibility with the yacht's charts before any depth calculation. A sheltered station supports the departure check, but does not disprove an outer-sea warning or establish conditions at another entrance.
Season, notices and a realistic fallback
Long summer daylight does not remove fatigue, cold-water exposure or the need for a visibility plan. In shoulder seasons add a current ice and harbour-access check. Read Swedish navigational warnings separately from weather forecasts, especially around fairways and work areas. Before leaving, choose a verified waiting option, the next update time and a trigger for abandoning the exposed leg. This country guide is not an operational forecast or permission to sail.
