Separate the Aura River or actual marina departure from the outer Archipelago Sea and any Åland crossing.
Define the marina and the first exposed crossing
Turku is a useful base label, but a departure from the Aura River and a marina in the surrounding islands do not share every access or traffic constraint. Write the actual starting berth into the route. Separate river/inner-fairway manoeuvring, protected archipelago channels and the first exposed section. If continuing toward Åland or beyond, add the new sea district and an arrival check rather than stretching one local forecast across the whole itinerary.
Shipping forecast plus local marine evidence
Use FMI's shipping forecast for the applicable marine area alongside its observations/forecast map. Record the current issue, valid hours and wind units for each ETA. A local station may show good departure conditions while a later exposed gap has different wind and waves. Compare gusts and visibility separately from the mean wind, and check explicit warnings. The forecast service is automated; do not imply a personal meteorologist has approved the trip.
Turku's level is a referenced station value
FMI includes Turku in its level network and shows N2000 separately from theoretical mean water. Preserve that reference with every copied number and verify the current chart/fairway datum. A low-water concern belongs in the brief as an unresolved access constraint until local depth information is checked. Neither an inner gauge nor an interpolated wave grid establishes the under-keel margin in a narrow remote passage. Missing forecast fields must stay marked missing.
Read VTS guidance without copying a ship's procedure
Fintraffic's Turku Master's Guide links Archipelago VTS, warnings and fairway resources. It contains obligations dependent on vessel size and operating area; check which apply to this yacht and departure. Smaller vessels still need a traffic-awareness and listening-watch plan where advised. Keep merchant traffic unobstructed and verify current port/marina instructions. Do not turn a commercial departure-permission paragraph into a blanket assertion that every recreational yacht needs the same clearance.
Test the sheltered alternative before counting on it
A shorter island route may reduce waves while adding turning, chart-reading and traffic workload. Confirm access and the final berth's exposure before assigning it as a fallback, and inspect seasonal ice/harbour information when relevant. Schedule a new FMI issue check before the open crossing; daylight length does not replace a fatigue or visibility margin. Retain a cold-water response and communication backup. The port desk is editorial preparation, not a live forecast or navigation clearance.
Official products by task
- FMI shipping forecast — Automated marine forecast divided into sea areas; the current page states six updates daily. Read issue/validity and the relevant sector, not a Turku city forecast.
- FMI marine observations and forecast map — Choose marine variables and a station/valid hour. The map distinguishes mean wind/gust, water-level references, waves and seasonal ice; a displayed grid is not charted passage clearance.
- FMI sea-level observations and forecasts — Station products include Turku and separate N2000 from theoretical mean water. A remote station or an ensemble interval cannot certify a particular shallow channel.
- FMI Baltic ice chart and report — Seasonal ice information; check the actual latest issue, geographic detail and associated restrictions. An ice chart is not an approved leisure-craft route.
- Fintraffic Turku Master's Guide — Port/Archipelago VTS information, fairway resources and links to warnings. It addresses masters and includes vessel-specific obligations; verify current applicability to a recreational departure.
- Fintraffic vessel traffic services — Official VTS participation and listening-watch guidance. Determine applicability to the yacht; do not copy merchant-vessel or pilotage requirements indiscriminately.
Waters and onward passages
- Finnish Archipelago Sea
Pair the sea-area bulletin with local channel and sea-level information.
- Baltic Sea
A Baltic overview should lead to the right national sea sector and water-level product.
Countries and local sources
- Finland
Separate the Archipelago Sea, Gulf of Finland and northern Baltic coasts; retain the sea-level reference and season.

The approximate area centre is not an approach waypoint, a track, a depth survey or a forecast-zone boundary. The third-party map loads only after your click.
