Prepare the Sound crossing and the specific Copenhagen harbour approach separately; forecast current, construction notices and traffic can change the usable plan.
Name the actual harbour, not just Copenhagen
A passage to Copenhagen can mean an open-water Sound crossing, a coastal leg or an approach into the commercial harbour. Identify the exact guest berth, entrance and arrival hour before matching forecasts. The city's land forecast is not a marine crossing forecast, and an inner-harbour wind cannot establish the outside sea state. Keep any planned bridge passage or access constraint separate from the weather window, with an attainable alternative rather than a pin at the city centre.
Read the Sound forecast at the crossing time
DMI's Bælthavet og Sundet product is the relevant named starting point for the Belts and Sound, not a substitute for every adjoining sea sector. Preserve its issue and valid period; follow into warnings where applicable. For a leg extending north or east, select the next sector too. Check whether the text uses local time or UTC and retain both labelled times in the brief. A current Danish product and a Swedish coastal product may be complementary, not competing national votes.
Current changes both ETA and the sea-state problem
Use DMI's current and wave displays at the relevant location and hour, noting that they are model fields rather than measured channel conditions. A current flowing against the wind can make an exposed stretch less comfortable; compare direction as well as magnitude. Recalculate the arrival assumption when current matters, and keep significant wave height distinct from an individual maximum. A water-level curve cannot supply a missing current speed or certify the depth of a particular harbour approach.
Harbour works and traffic have their own authority
By & Havn's harbour rules and sailing-information pages are the direct local starting points for access and traffic instructions. Check the newest Lynetteholm/Nordhavn notices and chart updates rather than treating a saved construction diagram as permanent. The reviewed works page gives a dated map and says its video does not show every work area. A favourable weather forecast does not override a closed passage, commercial traffic priority or a current harbour instruction; confirm the chosen marina's access separately.
Make waiting a usable alternative
Choose a berth or stop whose shelter and access still work if the crossing is delayed or the wind changes. Keep fuel, crew fatigue and daylight margins for the actual arrival, not only the nominal distance. Recheck the marine issue and local notice before leaving shelter, and define what change requires a new plan. This desk supports a skipper's evidence-based decision; it is not a live forecast, a reservation or harbour clearance.
Official products by task
- DMI Bælthavet og Sundet — Direct Belts/Sound sector entry. Verify loaded bulletin, issue/validity and any warning; successful page loading alone does not prove current data are available or that the whole itinerary is covered.
- DMI current forecast — Model-current display; inspect depth, run and valid hour where provided. A surface grid arrow is not measured stream through a specific harbour or strait.
- DMI wave forecast — Model wave product for Danish waters. Match direction and valid time to the leg; an open-grid significant wave value does not describe harbour wake or breaking at a shallow entrance.
- DMI water-level observations and forecasts — Choose a relevant gauge, observed versus forecast values and vertical reference. Automatic level curves are not identical to official storm-surge warnings or an entrance clearance.
- Danish active nautical information — Official publication point for active notices, navigation and shooting warnings; responsibility is stated as Beredskabsstyrelsen/Sikre Farvande. Separate these messages from DMI weather forecasts.
- By & Havn Copenhagen harbour regulations — Current harbour-authority rules including recreational traffic and signals. Read the latest text for the intended entrance and vessel; this guide does not reproduce a navigational manoeuvre or grant permission.
- By & Havn current Lynetteholm sailing notices — Local construction/traffic notice; the reviewed page labels a map valid to October 2026 and says its video omits some works. Recheck new versions rather than preserving a dated diagram as current instructions.
Waters and onward passages
- Danish straits
Check wind, current and the transition between Baltic and North Sea areas.
- Skagerrak and Kattegat
Compare named sea areas with forecasts for the coastal approach and narrow straits.
- Baltic Sea
A Baltic overview should lead to the right national sea sector and water-level product.
Countries and local sources
- Denmark
Distinguish North Sea approaches, Kattegat/Skagerrak, the Belts and Sound, and Baltic island passages.
Map orientation
The approximate area centre is not an approach waypoint, a track, a depth survey or a forecast-zone boundary. The third-party map loads only after your click.
