Choose the Gulf product and keep the coast boundary explicit
Use the NCM Gulf marine view for a Dubai–Abu Dhabi coastal scenario. The eastern coast facing the Sea of Oman is a different product choice. A place name or catalogue group does not validate a forecast boundary; write down the selected product and check the exposed leg against its stated coverage.
Evaluate a northwesterly episode as a whole passage
If the current forecast shows strengthening northwesterly flow, compare the expected wave field along the open leg with the protection at departure and arrival. Regional wind labels are useful context, not a fixed duration or a guaranteed daily schedule. Inspect the next valid hours: lower local wind at the berth does not establish that sea conditions outside have already eased.
Read onshore/offshore and units before comparing numbers
Do not transfer a coastal row to an offshore leg or equate a town wind card with the marine bulletin. Preserve the original wave-height units and definition; feet are not metres, and a range is not automatically Hs or a maximum wave. Where a numerical layer provides direction and period, compare them at the same location and valid hour rather than combining mismatched panels.
A shallow approach needs local water-level information
For an entrance or island channel, obtain the current chart, relevant tide/water-level reference and operator or authority instructions. Use these independently of the offshore wave forecast. Do not infer the entrance depth from a marina marketing page, map pin or favourable wind. If current or datum information is unavailable, retain it as an unresolved approach constraint.
An emirate boundary changes the navigation desk
A coastal passage can require Dubai and Abu Dhabi notices even when the meteorological product remains the same. Identify the actual waterway and inspect affected works, local restrictions and amendments in each official source. A historical notice does not prove the restriction remains in force; absence of a recovered document does not prove free access. Regional security requires a separate check for an onward passage.
Compare a short coastal leg, a later start and staying put
For a Dubai departure, compare your original option with an earlier or shorter leg and remaining at the confirmed berth. For each option record the outside-harbour conditions, arrival exposure, expected light/visibility, verified berth or refuge and next official update. Staying put is meaningful only while the current mooring and local instructions permit it. No option becomes approved merely because a model wind number is lowest.
