Define the actual marina and destination
A Genoa start can lead east along the Ligurian coast, west toward the French border or offshore toward Corsica. Those routes have different exposure and forecast-coverage requirements. Record the real marina and exit arrangement; the map centre is not a turning point through the commercial harbour.
Do not assume that proximity to a large service centre guarantees a refuge at your ETA. Check the selected destination's actual approach, berth availability and current local instructions, particularly if the forecast changes the wind-facing shore.
Select Mar Ligure and the warning picture
The official Meteomar interface is a marine product, unlike a city temperature page. Locate the Mar Ligure sector and the current gale information, with their issue and valid periods. For a passage into French waters, add the appropriate Météo-France product rather than stretching the Italian sector across a border.
Inspect terrain effects and swell separately
Coastal terrain can shelter a berth while an exposed leg remains windy. Treat a change in direction, stronger gusts or a forecast front as a reason to reassess headlands and arrival exposure. Compare wind sea with swell direction and period; neither a calm marina surface nor a single model grid cell resolves the sea beyond the breakwater.
Separate weather from port authority rules
Use the official authority portal to find the applicable instructions, but read the issuing body and subject. A commercial road-traffic ordinance is not a marine passage instruction. Obtain the harbour master's current guidance for your marina and route; this page does not prescribe channels, VHF calls or traffic-separation manoeuvres.
Compare a reversible coastal alternative
For an offshore Corsica plan, compare a shorter coastal leg and a delayed start on the same forecast clock. List the point beyond which the coastal alternative is no longer realistic. Do not call a later start better if it merely moves the difficult sea to a night arrival or beyond the reliable forecast horizon.
Keep an evidence trail
Save the selected sector, issue, validity, sea variables and a source for each harbour constraint. The Meteomar page requires JavaScript; the static editorial check confirmed the product entry, not a current operational bulletin. If the live product cannot be obtained, use another responsible official channel and mark the data gap explicitly.
