Do not infer an exposed western-Norway leg from a sheltered Bergen berth; compare entrance, outer coast and arrival separately.
A Bergen berth and the outer coast are different legs
Specify the actual berth and the direction of the onward passage before treating Bergen as a forecast point. Harbour shelter, a fjord connection and an outer-coast segment can have sharply different exposure. Mark the first place where the boat leaves protection and the arrival at its planned hour. An itinerary heading north or south may need more than one coastal warning area; a favourable inner-harbour wind does not establish an offshore departure window.
Find the coastal warning area, then the current issue
MET Norway's coastal-area map helps identify the appropriate warning name or code, while its marine-service entry links the actual forecast tools. The map itself is not today's warning. Obtain the current applicable issue and validity, then compare wind, gusts, visibility and wave exposure at the crossing ETA. If the official dynamic product cannot be loaded, record the gap and use another official reception channel; do not substitute an old screenshot as current evidence.
Use coastal wave detail honestly
BarentsWatch can show a wave profile for coastal tracks and points, adding detail to a single model cell. Inspect its current coverage and valid hour, and keep significant height, estimated maximum, direction and period distinct. A profile is not proof of safe depth or an approved route through islands. A small average over the whole passage can hide one exposed section, so retain that section's separate constraint instead of smoothing it into the harbour conditions.
Water level and an actual berth need confirmation
Use Kartverket for tide, observed level and forecast water level, with the appropriate datum and time handling. A predicted high tide is not necessarily the actual high-water level when weather contributes. The Port of Bergen's leisure-boat page is the direct source for visitor-berth arrangements and services, but not a guarantee of today's availability. Confirm the chosen berth and port instructions separately from the forecast; a weather improvement does not create an accessible destination.
A fjord fallback has its own limits
Test a protected alternative against entrance exposure, current charts, traffic and the crew's capacity to navigate in reduced visibility. Terrain can alter wind rapidly, and a sheltered station should not be used to reject an outer-coast warning. Set a check before leaving protected water, a point to turn back and a credible communications plan. Keep cold-water and fatigue margins even in summer. This preparation desk does not make the skipper's final sailing decision.
Official products by task
- MET Norway marine service links — Verified service entry linking sea-point forecasts, coastal warning-area definitions, water levels, fairway waves and ice. This page itself is not a current warning or forecast bulletin.
- MET Norway coastal warning-area map — The official map defines names/codes used in coastal alerts. It is a coverage reference, not a live issue or a declaration that no warnings exist.
- BarentsWatch fairway wave forecasts — Official public model application for selected coastal routes/points. Inspect the current model coverage and valid hour; Hs and estimated maximum are different, and a model track is not a navigationally approved route.
- Kartverket Se havnivå: tides and actual water level — Search by town or verified position and distinguish tide predictions, observations and forecast water level. Select datum and time zone; locations may derive from another gauge, and place-name queries can be imprecise.
- Port of Bergen leisure-boat information — Port-authority page for leisure berths and services. Confirm today's availability and terms directly; it neither guarantees a berth nor describes offshore sea state.
Waters and onward passages
- Norwegian fjords and coast
Conditions inside a fjord can differ materially from the exposed coastal leg.
Countries and local sources
- Norway
An inner fjord, exposed coastal leg and high-latitude voyage need different wind, wave, level and notice checks.
