Auckland, Waitematā Harbour and Hauraki departure: Marine Weather & Passage Planning

Separate the working harbour, inner Gulf and exposed island leg; read the written marine forecast, local navigation information and correctly timed tide references.

Waitematā and the Gulf are not the whole Auckland coast

For a Waitematā departure, identify the harbour stage, inner Hauraki leg and any exposed continuation toward an island or open coast. Select the applicable MetService recreational or coastal product for each rather than Auckland city weather. A Manukau plan is a different route with its own approach context; do not silently reuse this harbour desk for it. Keep the actual destination name and product boundary visible in the brief.

Read the written forecast before the boating score

The marine desk may combine written warnings and forecasts with automatically generated point wind, wave and ratings. Treat these as separate products. The written forecast can describe changes or hazards not summarised by a daily score, while point output represents its own model location and time. If script rendering prevents retrieval of the complete bulletin, mark that limitation instead of treating an indexed snippet or a favourable rating as today's complete official briefing.

Use LINZ date and clock without a second DST adjustment

Select the appropriate LINZ tide reference and read its stated handling of daylight saving. Compare departure, tide and ETA in one explicit time convention rather than mixing UTC with local hours. A high-water prediction is a height/timing reference, not slack throughout the harbour or island channels. Preserve chart datum and draft for a depth-sensitive arrival and obtain the local stream information separately when it is needed for the selected passage.

Shelter can change between outward and return legs

For a Waiheke or outer-Gulf outing, compare the return after a direction change or slower progress rather than copying outward conditions. Match wind and wave exposure to the actual receiving shore and anchorage. A harbour observation does not verify the sea state beyond the next island. If the destination loses protection at the revised arrival, reconsider the stop while a checked alternative remains practical, without assuming every nearby cove is usable.

Confirm the current Harbourmaster controls

Auckland's local navigation framework addresses a working harbour and different uses of its waters. The linked council PDF is a 2021 version; check amendments and current Harbourmaster controls before applying a speed, access or anchoring rule. Forecast evidence does not grant permission to use a commercial port area or guarantee a berth. Confirm the marina arrangement and navigation information independently, keeping local place names consistent with charts and authority advice.

Worked check: an island day trip with a later return

Write the harbour exit, exposed island stage, destination stop and return as separate timed legs. Add a later-return scenario and check the written forecast, warning, tide reference, arrival light and destination exposure at that time. If a needed source is unavailable, show the gap and a next-check action, not a confident recommendation invented by AI. This planning desk supports the skipper's evidence-based decision; it is not an automatic clearance or plotted navigation instruction.

Official products by task

  • MetService Auckland East Coast marine desk — Locate the applicable Hauraki or Auckland written marine forecast and warnings. Separate forecaster-written text from automatically generated point tables and ratings; script rendering may be required.
  • MetService marine responsibilities and coverage — Understand inshore, coastal and ocean service responsibilities. A responsibility description is not today's bulletin, its warning or an exact route intersection.
  • LINZ tide predictions and reference locations — Official New Zealand tide tables, including daylight-saving treatment and secondary-port information. High-water time is not slack water in every nearby channel.
  • Auckland Council Navigation Bylaw — Local navigation framework; linked PDF is the 2021 version. Check current amendments and Harbourmaster controls instead of relying on a hard-coded speed or access rule here.
