The Greek Ionian cruising grounds are not one sheltered pool. A short island hop, a mainland approach and an open-water crossing toward Italy require different forecast areas and a different view of sea state.

Use the HNMS marine bulletin for North or South Ionio and adjacent Greek areas, with the current warning and validity time. If the passage reaches Italian waters, add the relevant products of the Italian Air Force Meteorological Service; do not extend a Greek coastal forecast across the entire crossing.
Check before a passage
- Match departure, open leg and arrival to the bulletin areas, not just the nearest town.
- Check afternoon wind changes, gusts, swell and the orientation of the next anchorage.
