Abaco Islands: local passage checks beyond the Bahamas overview.
Forecast sectors and coverage
Obtain the Bahamas local marine issue and applicable NHC marine/tropical context. A US coastal product is not a local Bahamas warning; verify the island-group coverage and the bulletin’s issue/valid times.
Weather-sensitive legs
Distinguish the Sea of Abaco leg from an ocean-facing inlet. Swell access and local stream at a cut can differ from conditions inside the island shelter. Do not infer entrance passability from the flat-water leg.
Observations, sea state and reassessment
Confirm chart datum, local tide/stream publication and latest harbour information before evaluating a shallow entrance. No universal cut timing, stream measurement or under-keel calculation is supplied here.
Worked planning scenario — not a live forecast
Compare an inside-water plan with one requiring an ocean cut, using each cut’s ETA and current local guidance. If the entrance evidence is missing, keep that gap explicit rather than choosing a favourable model hour.
Official products by task
- Bahamas Department of Meteorology — Official local weather-service portal; locate current marine bulletins and verify island-group coverage.
- NHC marine products — Tropical Atlantic marine coverage; select the current product and its geographical limits.
- NHC tropical cyclone information — Advisories, watches/warnings and outlooks; a track cone is not the full wind or wave footprint.
- NOAA NDBC observations — Station map and timestamped buoy/coastal records; inspect sensor availability and exposure.
Sector names help you locate the issuing product; they are not an automatic route-coverage match. Open the current issue and check boundaries, issue time and validity. This page does not display current warnings; an unavailable product does not mean no hazard.
Map orientation
The approximate map centre is not an approach waypoint, track, depth survey or forecast-zone boundary. The third-party map loads only on request.
Build your passage brief
Bring your route, leg timings, vessel and crew profile, checked sources and reassessment triggers into the brief. Personal AI analysis and expert review are available to invited closed-test participants; a port page does not extend the calculation service’s coverage.

Label which Sea of Abaco plan needs an ocean opening
In the itinerary, distinguish a Sea of Abaco leg from one that exits to or arrives from the Atlantic. Mark the precise opening as a separate decision item with its own arrival estimate and current local information. The Bahamas national bulletin provides weather context; it is not a passability report for that opening. Avoid a universal wind or wave threshold for every Abaco entrance.
- Bahamas Department of Meteorology — Official national entry point, radar and forecast links; no pass-specific current guarantee.
Check swell even after the local wind eases
Compare the offshore swell direction and period with the opening's exposure, then compare that with what is actually observed at the approach. Protected-water observations describe their own setting, not the ocean side. Ask the harbour or competent local operator for the latest entrance information and confirm when it was obtained; yesterday's description cannot validate today's changing sea. Charts and notices remain separate evidence.

- NHC marine products — Broader Gulf, Caribbean and tropical Atlantic/Pacific context; confirm the current product at the issuer. Direct product verification is limited; obtain the current issue from the issuer.
Rehearse an inside-water alternative
Before selecting an itinerary that needs an ocean cut, compare it with an inside-water option that genuinely remains available to this vessel and charter agreement. Test the full return leg rather than assuming a comfortable outbound run will be reversible. If the entrance report is missing, or the return now has a different swell angle, leave the uncertainty visible and reassess the cut-dependent stop.
