The Baltic is a major home-water cruising region, not simply a passage from the North Sea. An archipelago route, the open Baltic, the Danish straits and the Gulf of Finland have different forecasts and coastal authorities.
Official marine-weather sources
The Swedish SMHI sea forecast names Baltic, strait and gulf areas and gives wind in metres per second. Use the national marine service for each coast or island group actually visited; a Swedish product is not the only authority around the basin. For longer sea-area orientation use the WMO/IMO directory.
Check before a passage
- Locate the named sea area for each open leg and the separate local forecast for island passages.
- Check wind shifts, visibility, sea level and wave conditions; add ice information when the season and route require it.
- Convert units explicitly and verify warning times before a border-crossing or night approach.
