Name the basin and the onward leg
Les Minimes, the old harbour and La Pallice are different starting contexts. Record the actual berth, access constraints and intended exit before comparing departure times. A forecast labelled La Rochelle cannot establish the state of every entrance or the water depth at your berth.
For a Ré/Oléron circuit, a coastal continuation or an offshore Biscay crossing, build a separate sequence of exposed legs. The protected berth is only the first observation point; it does not represent the Pertuis, an island approach or the sea beyond.
Use marine products, not the town forecast
Use the Charente marine display to inspect wind, gusts and the separation of total sea, wind sea and swell. Then select the relevant Météo-France coastal bulletin and BMS for the actual route. Add a large-area product when the track leaves the coastal product's coverage; check the publisher's map rather than inferring a boundary from the city name.
Keep tidal height and stream separate
A predicted water height is not a current speed or slack-water time. Check the tide reference, chart datum and the particular entrance against current charts and local instructions. At the editorial check, the marina's page supplied tide predictions and indicative coefficient-based heights, not a live measured harbour level; recheck the product status before using it. Evaluate wind against stream where the route crosses an inlet or channel; a convenient high-water time does not guarantee a comfortable sea.
Check access notices independently
Open the current marina notices for dredging, events, temporary exclusions and berth access. Read the affected basin and dates rather than carrying a previous notice into today's plan. An absent weather warning does not cancel a port restriction, and a marina opening does not cancel an offshore warning.
Make the arrival exposure part of the brief
Compare swell direction and period with the chosen arrival coast, not only the departure wind. Set a later review before committing beyond the next practical return option. If updated wind, visibility, sea state or access information invalidates that option, shorten or postpone the leg instead of treating the original itinerary as fixed.
Record sources and their limits
Save the marine bulletin's issue and validity period, the water-height reference and the notice date separately. This desk identifies a preparation workflow; it does not display live harbour clearance or certify a weather window. The harbour master's current instructions and the skipper's vessel-specific assessment remain necessary.
