Australia: Marine Weather & Passage Planning

Match each Australian leg to its local-water, coastal or high-seas product, keeping harbour entrance conditions separate from offshore weather.

Local water is a distinct product, not a small coast forecast

Start in the BoM marine directory and select the actual waterway. Sydney enclosed waters and Port Phillip have local-water forecasts; a coastal sector or high-seas product answers a different question. A harbour day sail and an offshore delivery should not share one simplified city forecast. For a route changing states or forecast sectors, put the boundary and next issuing product into the passage record before comparing times of departure.

Choose an existing regional desk for the intended trip

Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef coast need reef and exposed-water stages distinguished. East Australian coastal passages need harbour-to-coast handovers; Western Australia is too extensive for one state-wide icon. Tasmania and Bass Strait add island, strait and arrival-coast exposure. Use these existing pages for their separate scenarios. Port Phillip supplies a bay-scale complement, not a replacement for the Bass Strait material when leaving through the Heads.

Arrival can be the limiting stage after wind eases

Carry offshore swell direction and period into the arrival assessment, then obtain the relevant harbour authority's current entrance information. A calmer wind forecast does not calculate breakers on a bar or the local stream. Review the entrance at the actual ETA, including a slower passage. If the receiving coast remains unsuitable, a nearby harbour is not automatically a usable diversion: its approach, access and waiting arrangements need their own checks.

Tide predictions and current maps serve different purposes

Select the BoM tide reference that fits the destination and read its time and height convention. Do not turn high water into slack at every entrance, or use an offshore current field as a local channel observation. For depth-sensitive arrival, preserve the chart datum and expected draft and leave unknown corrections unresolved. Coastal observations should be checked by sensor and exposure rather than blended into one supposedly measured state of the whole route.

Seasonal choice does not replace a departure check

Northern tropical routes and southern exposed passages require different seasonal preparation, but a favourable month never establishes the next weather window. Use the relevant current wind and, where applicable, tropical-cyclone products before fixing a coastal or island leg. Read the complete local forecast as well as warnings: squalls, visibility and a wind change can affect a small crew even when its personal limits differ from official warning thresholds.

Build an update plan that works away from broadband

Save the selected text bulletin with its issue and validity, then identify an actually available update channel before losing shore internet. Keep raw observations and model fields distinguishable in the brief. Reassess after delay, a materially different observation or changed warning, and reserve a checked waiting option before the next exposed leg. MarineLite helps reduce page weight; it does not guarantee offshore connectivity, current local directions or permission to enter.

Official products by task

  • BoM MarineLite product directory — Choose Australian local-water, coastal and high-seas forecasts and warnings by their stated area. A directory is an access route, not a live forecast.
  • BoM coastal and local-water observations — Choose the relevant station and recorded variable, checking timestamp and exposure. Coastal wind measurements do not measure all approach waves or offshore currents.
  • BoM tide predictions — Select the actual reference location and time convention. Predicted water height and tidal-stream timing are different products; weather can affect actual levels.
  • BoM Sydney Enclosed Waters IDN11013 — Written local-water forecast for Sydney Harbour, Pittwater and Botany Bay. Check the actual waterway and obtain separate coastal coverage when leaving enclosed waters.
  • BoM Port Phillip Local Waters IDV10460 — Port Phillip bay forecast, including relevant squall information. It is not a calculation of currents or breaking seas at the Heads, or a Bass Strait forecast.
  • Safe Transport Victoria: local knowledge at the Heads — Official context for specialised local-knowledge preparation, including recreational course options. Commercial certificate rules must not be generalised to every leisure sailor.
